Topic 4: ESL/EFL writing and Facebook

Do you use Facebook? What? You have no idea about what I am talking about? Just kidding! Facebook is one of the most useful social networking tools, which help people to find each other and communicate on line. Please try to spend some time setting up a page for yourself if possible, and reflect on how you may use it for EFL writing.

Facebook...Fortunately, I also have one. But, who will write a lot in facebook? I believe few sentence is good enough. Most time, I just say hello there to friends and make sure they are still alive.
Few sentense may be helpful for English writing. Maybe....

Gene, I agree most of us don't write much on Facebook, but socialize and network with friends as well as update our info. Facebook is more like an online space to showcase one's profile. It could be of great help when an ESL/EFL teacher is trying to build up a learning community. Once learners familiarize themselves with each other, strong connection among them will definitely facilitate learning to occur.

Speaking of the facebook, I don't really use it since we Asians use MSN instead of it. In general, both the facebook and MSN have similar functions as I think. First of all, I use it to communicate with my friends, and I even use MSN to talk to my parents. So, I would say MSN(or facebook) can enhance my interpersonal skills and social relationships. In addition, it helps me to uplaod my photos and meanwhile see my friends' ablums, which is so much fun.I know some of my friends write something relevant to their lives on MSN ( or facebook), and I think people can communicate in writing
through the media, and more or less, they imporve their writing skills since it is the only way
to communicate in this virtual
world (facebook). However,
according to some reports, experts point out that writing learners might get some drawbacks by using online chatting or writing. It is becasue people tend to use some fragements, short sentences or informal words when communicating on line, which impact their formal writing styles.

Hi John, there are always pros and cons when we bring in a new technology tool. Could you please share with us some articles you have reviewed? The empirical study may provide some insights with things that we as practitioners need to be aware of. BTW, I am a faithful user of MSN messenger too.

Maybe I will try it...>"<

Unfortunately, I really have no idea about Facebook. Through John's opinion, I got some information. If it is more convenient to use than MSN, maybe we can try this one!

Facebook is a online chatting tool like MSN, people can discuss or talk something without facing others, it is more and more important tool in the modern world.

Kyle Huang 提到...

Hi Mia, Evelyn, Carolyn, Guess what? Facebook was founded by Mark Zuckerberg, a former member of the Harvard 2006 class. Originally the membership was restricted to students of Harvard College and was subsequently expanded to all Ivy League schools within two months. Many individual universities were added in rapid succession over the next year. Since September 11, 2006, it has been made available to users with any email address. Users can select to join one or more participating networks, such as a high school, place of employment, or geographic region. The site features of facebook include: the wall, gifts, marketplace, pokes, events, application, video, etc. Just try it and you will find a lot of fun stuff. You are also welcome to add me in your good friend list!

Actually I have not heard about that before. Now I know it can help us chat with each other on line. In fact, it is a little like MSN. Now we have one more choice to choose to chat on the Internet.

Hi5, facebook or Myspace are known as social networking websites. Here is a link about almost complete list of these websites
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_social_networking_websites
We can find from the list, Windows live spaces also has similar function.

However, whether this kind of social networking website is popular or not actually depends on how many registrar users they have. If a lot of my friends use specific one, I will join them due to the peer effect. I think Facebook is very successful because it catch the need of college students first, who are in level with highest internet usage. Taiwan has similar websites years ago, CityFamily (www.cityfamily.com.tw). It was established in 98 or 99. But this websites is far from successful. The reason I heard is; at that years, this kind websites is not popular and well designed. The functions of socail can be easily substituted by BBS, especially PPT bbs. Additionally, this website has problems and makes it very unfriendly. I have no idea about how it is going so far.

Facebook is not popular within international students, without saying students not attending to U.S schools. I started to use facebook because some of my friends asked me about it. It is one way they develop the social network in internet. I remember I have hi5 account long time ago, but no one really contact me there. I also registered Myspace recently. Guess what? None of my friends use that, So, I even do not develop my profile… all my information is blank there.

wewe 提到...

Well, actually I also have one, but unfortunately that I still not very understand how to use it. I think that it would be very important and convenient in the future, so I will take your advice and try to take a good management of it.

Kyle Huang 提到...

Hi Gene, The comparison chart of the social network is quite helpful. I registered the Hi5 before but no one used it, so I quit using it. I started using facebook and MySpace after I came to TX because of the class needs. I realize the redundancy of updating the profile of an online space and somewhat feel wasting time. I can see why City family is prevalent in Taiwan given its similar functions and features embedded in a platform like Wretch. Also, it's not uncommon to observe this type of “blindly-following”culture over this virtual net world. And for We-we, keeping on going, you will find a good way to manage the tool! I will be here to support you from time to time~

I don't think facebook could improve students' writing skils a lot. Most of the languages used in facebook or inside the chatrooms are very colloquial. The language is definitely not very suitable for English learning/writing.

Kyle Huang 提到...

Hi Angela, I totally understand your point, but by saying that we are assuming a type of Standard English and ideology of hegemony. My American classmate, Justin, was discussing this issue with me yesterday from the perspectives of post-modernism and ethnography and somewhat I feel it quite thought-provoking.

I have to admit that I don't enjoy Facebook a lot 'cos it's not user friendly, see...things get complicated when you try to put too many functions on a web. The more we can efficiently maximize the outcome, the more successful the tool will be. while connecting all those strangers through the "networks", I cannot help but feeling that I am becoming transparent in the public. Oh well, maybe it's who has a very simple mind that embraces the philosophy of "KISS" (Keep It Simple Stupid)

Kyle Huang 提到...

Hi Josette, I really like the philosophy of "kiss" (keep it simple stupid). Always, design for users and usability!

I read an article from a newspaper mentioning that the users of Facebook have tried hard to delete their address there once they don't want to ues it anymore.
Is that so?

And it's a fascinating experience to update info. by surfing these internet resources.

I have used facebook for a long time! I can contact with all my friends(from junior school to university), we always write something interesting on each other's wall! And we like to add a lot of fun applications, I think facebook is a good thing that we can share almost everything with friends!!

Frances 提到...

Most of the users of Facebook are American. So far,it's not popular with young people in Taiwan. But it's a good way to learn the writing of second language. Perhaps I will create an account of Facebook in the coming days.

I had knew facebook since two months ago. It was so popular in America. I want to have some foreign friends on line, so it is a good choice to use facebook. I not yet have a facebook, but it will be soon to have one!

I don't have the Facebook, but I have saw one of my friends'. I think Facebook provide stronger privacy and safty for the users, cause you can not see others' Facebook unless he or she accept you as friend.

You can add me in your friend's list by searching my Chinese name, Chung-Kai Huang. They have many new adds-on, for example, the chat box. Will be glad to talk to you all on facebook.

You are mistaken. Let's discuss it.

Yes, I do. I use Facebook. I always use it to communicate with others. I seldom use it for EFL writing.

You are not right. I am assured. Let's discuss it. Write to me in PM, we will communicate.

Unknown 提到...

humm... I think it'll be a great idea to have EFL writing. I usually use my FB to connect with my friends or leave some comment on each others board. I have lots of foreigner friends. I think these friends might help me for the EFL teaching.

Selina 提到...

Facebook is popular now. I often use Facebook. I can communicate with others by using Facebook.

Facebook is the most popular networking tool that students love to use. I like to use Facebook to connect with my friends in the long vacation. It is convenient that people can use Facebook to search their international friends even their classmates in the elementary schools! I also can make some international friends through playing some interactive games in Facebook. Most of all, I can put some words about my feeling on my homepage rapidly and share with my friends by using Facebook.
