Topic 6: ESL/EFL writing and MySpace

Do you have your own space online? Did you know MySpace is very popular and widely used in the US? Got some time to explore it? I am sure you will find the integrated interface full of text, pictures, audios, and so forth. From an EFL learner's perceptive, would it be possible to integrate MySpace in the classroom for helping with writing activities? What are some activities you would like to do on MySpace?

Hi 睿程, keeping a diary definitely sounds doable and helpful to you concerning your packed schedule. I use Windows Live Space for collecting my diary and pictures, and I feel so motivated and excited whenever I am about to share my US life with friends back in Taiwan through composing short messages.

I have several spaces online. Some for my assignments of my courses in university, and some for recording my life. Maybe I can try this one to share something with US people, and then I can learn more!

Myspace is a good place to preserve my writing forever, you don't worry about your writings will miss. In there you also can write down your feeling everyday, just like traditional diary.

Hi Mia, Evelyn, Yiwen, and Carolyn, MySpace enables us to talk and write to people whose native language is English, and I assume that provides all ESL/EFL an authentic environment and interaction. Note that we as users still need to be careful about the inappropriate content (violence, drug, scam, sex) displayed on it. Due to the safety issue, most US K-12 schools have filtered the social networking tools out of their campuses.

I have some spaces on line, however, those spaces are just for the assignments. I will try to build a space to write down everything I want to share!

Hi, Yilings and Vulcanelf, Through the online participatory culture, I am sure we will all benefit from the sharing as well as the collective intelligence. Please enjoy the tour for fun not just assignment! If you are into the virtual tour, try Second Life and Quest Atlantis, you know the avatars and the 3D environment sometimes are surprising! They are both accessible via my Web 2.0 blog http://chungkaii.blogspot.com/

I think I might ask EFL/ESL students to keep a jounral or diary on MySpace, and share their webpages with each other, or even ask them to respond to each other's MYSPACE. It's a bit like the traditional "peer review" techniques in EFL/ESL writing.

Kyle Huang 提到...

To Ko, please try the online peer review and let me know how it goes in your class. I am sure it will be effective scaffolding in terms of writing for accuracy and fluency.

I agree with your opinion. It really helps us a lot. Sometimes we couldn't correct our articles by ourselves. At this time, it could help us a lot and find the meaning of unfamiliar word.
